Welcome to Nash and Elena’s fundraising page to celebrate making it through 2.5 years of leukemia treatment- together!
In deep gratitude to God and for the science that has allowed our children another chance at life, and in honor of too many friends who are no longer here earthside due to the monster of childhood cancer, our families are committed to fighting childhood cancer for the rest of our lives.
Nash and Elena have shown us the power of friendship in adversity and that no one fights alone. In honor of their bravery and completing cancer treatment successfully, the Thompson and Howard families are raising $50,000 for CURE and we ask for your help!
We have chosen to direct these funds to go towards funding genetic sequencing for over a dozen children who have relapsed or hard-to-treat cancers. Imagine yourself in these families' place, if you will for a moment. Your child has been through treatment and it has failed. They have a miniscule chance of survival, and need expensive genetic sequencing- not covered by insurance- to identify if any targeted drugs or clinical trials could work for them. That's where we can step in to pay for this for them.
$50,000 might sound like a big goal, but when you think about what Nash and Elena have accomplished, it feels possible.
$50,000 is... $29 for every day Nash and Elena spent in active treatment over the last 2.5 years.
$50,000 is... $83 for every time they had to take toxic chemotherapy by mouth, injection or infusion
$50,000 is... $100 for every time they had a 1-inch needle plunged into the port in their chest.
$50,000 is... $300 for every night they spent in the hospital.
$50,000 is... $600 for every blood, platelet, plasma or IVIG transfusion to keep them alive
$50,000 is... $1000 for every time they were sedated under anesthesia and had a spinal tap
$50,000 is... $1800 for every night they spent in the ICU
Every year in the United States, nearly 16,000 innocent children are forced into the fight of a lifetime with a cancer diagnosis. Decades of research have pushed the survival rates above 80%, more children are lost to cancer than any other disease. And two-thirds of those who do survive suffer long-term effects from the treatments used to save their lives. Notwithstanding, less than 4% of federal funding for cancer research is aimed at solving childhood cancers. That's why it's critical that CURE pours funds into research - so science, and treatments, continue to advance.
Come join the fight with us to cure childhood cancer while honoring our two little heroes.
